Five
Mountains Hawaii is excited to introduce a new
program called Healthy Grindz, a guide
to healthier eating in North Hawaii.
Research shows that more than 33% of meals are
eaten out, so the options available on menus can
really make an impact on wellness. All restaurants
in the North Hawaii area are invited to participate.
There are 3 simple criteria to
qualify a restaurant for our Healthy
Grindz Premier Partners list:

Offer a whole grain or multigrain
in place of a refined one. This could be a
multigrain bread, corn tortilla or whole wheat
tortilla or wrap, whole wheat pasta or brown
rice.

Offer vegetables or non starchy
vegetable salad as a substitute for the starch
on plated meals.

Offer smaller size meals.
This could be half portions of select entrees
for a reduced price or a meal split for no
extra charge, low fat pupu size entrees or
healthy ala carte offerings.
We encourage restaurants to offer
other healthy items like low fat and low salt
sauces and dressings, light desserts and to exclude
trans fats from their menus. Locally sourced fruits
and vegetables are also desirable parts of a healthy
menu that will promote and sustain the aina as
well as its inhabitants.
We also have a list of restaurants
that don’t quite fit the criteria above
but have some healthful items on their menus.
